Internet to Hit 2B Users by End of 2010

Nearly one-third of the world’s population will be online by the end of the year, according to a United Nations report.

The number of people using the Internet around the world doubled in the past five years and should surpass 2 billion users by the end of this year, noted a report from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a U.N. agency focused on information and communications technology issues.

Facebook and Bing Team-Up for Social Search

Can your search get by with a little help from your friends? Bing thinks so. The Microsoft search site now lets users upgrade their queries by drawing on information friends have shared on Facebook.

One new Bing search option, Liked Results, should spotlight relevant items shared by friends on Facebook. As a post on Bing’s blog explains, a search for restaurants in San Francisco would no longer show just those places that the Web at large deems worthy of interest, but establishments Facebook pals like.

Anti-Facebook Diaspora Sets Launch for Sept. 15

Google vs Facebook

Google vs Facebook

Facebook: it’s the world’s biggest website, by some calculations, and fast overtaking Google as the technology poster child of our time. But don’t underestimate Google, which is reportedly working on a new social networking project to try and rival Facebook’s domination in the space.

Social networking is one area where Google has failed to get traction, at least in the English-speaking world. It owns Orkut, which is big in Brazil and India - but where Facebook is starting to close in on their market share. Buzz, Wave, Friend Connect - none have quite made the impact Google would have liked, though worthwhile experiments.
