Facebook Places Deals to Target Local Business Ads in UK and Europe

Facebook made a significant move into the potentially lucrative local business advertising space on Monday with the launch in the UK and other European countries of Places Deals, which gives users discounts and benefits with nearby shops, restaurants and venues through their mobile phones.

Launched in the US last November, Facebook Deals lets users ‘check in’ to venues via the Places feature on its mobile app for iPhone, Android and through facebook.com on some smartphones.

Apple iPad Newspaper, The Daily, To Launch Feb. 2

Apple’s iPad will host a tablet-only newspaper created by News Corp starting Feb. 2, according to an invitation circulating among media.

That digital publication, the Daily, will cost 99 cents per week. According to Reuters, the original Jan. 19 unveiling date was scrubbed “because of technical glitches.” News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch and Apple Vice President of Internet Services Eddy Cue will headline the new launch event, scheduled to take place in New York City.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs to Take Medical Leave Again

Steve Jobs, the iconic chief executive of Apple who has battled serious health problems for years, said Monday that he is taking another medical leave of absence, raising questions about whether the country’s most highly valued technology company can prosper without its leader.

The announcement that the creator of the iPod, iPhone and iPad would step aside - without revealing the extent of his medical problems or how long he’ll be on leave - prompted criticism from some analysts that Apple was betraying its obligations to tell its shareholders important information.

Financial Times taps Jobs as Person of the Year

Never mind Mark What’s-His-Name, The Financial Times, Britain’s equivalent of The Wall Street Journal, has handed its Person of the Year crown to Steve Jobs, the Apple CEO and onetime tech wunderkind turned comeback player of the quarter century.

Saying this year’s unveiling of the iPad “capped the most remarkable comeback in modern business history,” the FT noted Apple’s Jobs-led bounce-back from its near demise in the ’90s, as well as the visionary leader’s perseverance through his recent struggles with cancer. In terms of Silicon Valley lore, the publication said, Jobs now shares the stage with no one.
