SAP Verdict Rattles Tech-Support Sector

Friday, November 26th, 2010

oracle-sapOracle Corp.’s success in winning a $1.3 billion jury verdict against rival SAP AG sent tremors through a small but fast-growing niche in the technology sector: companies that provide technical support for other companies’ software.

So-called third-party support companies supply maintenance and repairs—though not software upgrades—for a variety of business programs. The verdict Tuesday stemmed from the actions of a now-closed SAP unit called TomorrowNow that supported Oracle products. The JCP determines which technologies do and do not make it into official Java specifications. Elections to the JCP Executive Committee are taking place this month. Executive committee member Doug Lea has pulled out of seeking another term on the panel and criticized Oracle’s handling of the JCP. And JCP participant Stephen Colebourne, a JCP specification leader and Apache Software Foundation member, objects to Oracle’s nomination of Hologic to serve on the executive committee. Certifications in the Technology Industry

The value of IT certifications is a constant debate in the tech industry. Some veteran IT professionals claim they’re of limited value, while others see them as key building blocks for a better career.

Technology professionals generate much debate over just that question. Many claim vendor-specific programs best measure a candidate’s skills, while others propose vendor-independent exams are the only worthy way of measuring real-world expertise. Still other observers believe the highest-level accreditations - Microsoft’s MCSE or new Architect Series certification, Cisco’s CCIE, etc. - are the only credentials that truly hold value.
