Facebook Places Deals to Target Local Business Ads in UK and Europe

Facebook made a significant move into the potentially lucrative local business advertising space on Monday with the launch in the UK and other European countries of Places Deals, which gives users discounts and benefits with nearby shops, restaurants and venues through their mobile phones.

Launched in the US last November, Facebook Deals lets users ‘check in’ to venues via the Places feature on its mobile app for iPhone, Android and through facebook.com on some smartphones.

Motorola Launches Xoom Tablet with Android 3.0

Motorola finally unveiled its highly anticipated tablet, the Xoom, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen with the latest version of Google’s Android mobile software on board, formerly called Honeycomb.

Google worked with Motorola and chip maker Nvidia on the launch of Android 3.0 on a tablet device.

Android 3.0 is designed for tablets, not smartphones as Android was originally designed for. The Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor on board can deliver up to 2GHz of power, since each core runs at 1GHz, according to a joint news release from Motorola and Verizon. The tablet will be available for Verizon users.

Intel: Dell, Toshiba, Acer tablets coming in 2011

Intel CEO Paul Otellini said today that its chips will be in more than 35 different tablet designs in 2011, while clarifying that two lines of Atom processors will be used in tablets.

“We’re going to make sure we support all of the viable operating systems that are in the marketplace,” Otellini said at the Barclays Capital 2010 Global Technology Conference. The conference audio was streamed live over the Internet.

10 Things We Want to See in Chrome OS

Thanks to a mysterious invitation sent out to the media last week, there’s widespread speculation that Google will announce, or maybe even release, the desktop OS it’s been talking about for over a year. The company has said that Chrome OS will launch before the end of 2010. But one has to wonder about the need for the operating system with the same name as the browser, since touch tablets have successfully been introduced running mobile OSes like Google’s own Android and Apple’s iOS.

If the target is netbooks, as Google execs have implied, then good luck to Google: The market unanimously rejected a non-market-leading OS when Linux netbooks were offered a couple years ago and quickly updated to run Windows XP. And Chrome OS is basically the Chrome browser running atop a Google-customized version of Linux. For those who simply want to browse the Web, watch online videos, and perhaps do a bit of work on documents, there’s no reason why a lightweight Web-centric OS shouldn’t be welcomed.
