According to one of the latest reports from JiWire, a leading mobile audience media channel and Wi-Fi advertising network, iPhone became the most popular mobile device among people to connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots. Staying connected for no less than an hour the users mostly visit social networking sites.
The report provided by JiWire on Wi-Fi usage across the U.S. for the first half of 2009 is a very extensive analysis which shows curious results.
First of all, the company reveals statistics on where everyone uses Wi-Fi. Thus, 55.3% are accessing Wi-Fi at hotels/resorts, 27% at airports, 10.5% at cafes, 4.4% on ships or ferries, and 2.7% on public transportation.
According to JiWire, about 56% of respondents admitted to accessing Wi-Fi at cafes more than once per week while 46% said that they stayed at a café for 1-2 hours.
As the report shows, what is even more interesting is that a majority 54.2% of all mobile devices that are used to access Wi-Fi in places such as cafes are iPhones. The iPod Touch ranks #2 with 43.4%. Thus, Apple devices jointly make up an incredible total figure of 97.6% of all mobile devices accessing Wi-Fi at cafes.
As more mobile devices with Wi-Fi access enabled appear on the market, these statistics may change. Yet, Apple devices are current leaders in this field.
