How to Improve your English?

In our previous blog post, we were talking about the importance of learning English in today’s business and social life. So if you understand how important this for you, then there is the next following question – HOW can you improve your English level? Do you need to visit language courses or study by yourself, do you need to watch movies/serials in their original English form or is reading some English books enough, is there a real need for passing a language test? If you’re interested in these answers, then check the post below.

Attend language courses

Softheme provides English language courses to all its employees. The lessons are organized and held by a native-speaker. Different levels, topics and convenient time schedules are available and free of charge. Just visit and enjoy.

Watch movies, TV series, and serials with English subtitles but without translation

The Original version of videos leaves better impressions after watching it. Why? Because most of the TV and movie language is pretty difficult to translate without losing some or even most of the authentic meaning, for example English humor.

If it is too difficult to watch the whole video in English, try watching the first 10-15 minutes of the movie in your own language and then switch to original version with subtitles.

Read your favorite book with translation into English

A good way to start reading English books is to begin with your favorite one that was translated into English. You will find English is written in a slightly more simplified way as it’s translated from your own language. And you already know the story of the book perfectly so you need to only pay attention to how everything is written and expressed in English.

Read English language comics, magazines, entertainment guides

Comics can be easy to understand (because of the pictures) and full of spoken language. There can be difficulties with slang and difficulties with understanding jokes so it’s better to choose some more serious or adventure comic rather that a funny one. Also if you can read two versions (one in your native language and one in English) of the same magazines (for example, National Geographic), this could make understanding of English much easier.

Listen to English music and read the lyrics to the song

God save the Queen … and British music. Even listening to music can help you to get used to the natural rhythm and tone of English speech, although the more time you give to a song the more you will learn from listening to it in the future. If you want to get something out of listening to English music you can take some time to read the lyrics of the song with a dictionary at your fingertips.

Although buying music online is becoming popular in many countries, you can purchase and download audio books and speech radio which is also a great practice for your listening to English language.

Start your own English language blog

Practice, practice, practice… If you like to share your ideas and professional thoughts with others in social networks, well this is great but it would be even better if you would try to write at least some of your posts in English. Writing can be a great way to make you start thinking about how to stop making grammar mistakes. And it could be some kind of motivation for your friends and followers to improve their English.

Take holidays abroad

The best way to practice is to practice in an English-speaking environment. Holidays abroad are a good opportunity to use English in situations where your English really has to be understood. If possible, even try to use English when you could use your own language, like when you have an audio tour of a museum or any other historic place.

Switch operating system and software into English

Changing the operating language of your PC or cell phone, Google search or software interface into English can be an easy way to make sure you use the language every day.

Use an English-English dictionary

Using a monolingual dictionary can help you to stop translating in your head when you’re speaking or listening and other useful English vocabulary can come up while you are using this dictionary.

Set goals

Like with any other tasks, you have to understand why you need it, what is your final goal and how you can achieve it. Deciding how many words you want to learn, what result on the language test you want to get are all good ways of making sure you do your job of learning English efficiently.

If you want to check your level of English, then you can take an English language test, among which most useful are IELTS and TOEFL. The decision to pass such an exam can really motivate you to take your English studies seriously.
