Gartner: 22 Percent Growth in Global SaaS Earnings in 2009

The latest forecasts of Gartner, the world’s leading information technology market research and advisory company, show that the market for software-as-a-service (SaaS) is expected to reach $8 billion in 2009, which is a 22% increase from 2008 revenue of $6.6 billion. Besides, the market will be consistently growing through 2013 with the worldwide SaaS revenue reaching the figure of $16 billion for the enterprise application market.

“The adoption of SaaS continues to grow and evolve within the enterprise application markets as tighter capital budgets in the current economic environment demand leaner alternatives, popularity increases, and interest for platform as a service and cloud computing grows,” said Gartner representatives.

Using of SaaS is not the same among and within markets. The fastest-growing markets for SaaS are still office suites and digital content creation (DCC). The former are forecast to reach $512 million in 2009, as compared to $136 million in 2008, while DCC is projected to reach $126 million in 2009, which was $70 million in 2008. The widest disparity of SaaS revenue across market segments remains in content, communications and collaboration (CCC) market, which is expected to generate $2.5 billion in 2009, up from $2.16 billion in 2008.

Within enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM) markets SaaS adoption also varies, which is based on process complexity. SaaS is projected to account for only about 1% of ERP manufacturing and operations revenue, yet, by 2013, it will represent more than 18% of human capital management (HCM) and 30% of the procurement segment. The customer relationship management (CRM) market shows more common market adoption, with the range between 9 % and over 33% of total software revenue, which depends on the CRM subsegment. Totally, SaaS represented more than 18% of the CRM market total revenue in 2008.
