How IT Sourcing Pros Can Do Better on Emerging Technology

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

outsourceAs the latest technologies are incorporated into the business process, organizations will naturally become more comfortable when working with third-party technology vendors. This means the ability to identify, select, and manage the right technology vendor can make the difference between the success and failure of a new business initiative. But, while many sourcing and vendor management (SVM) professionals are starting to play an increasingly important role in this emerging technology evaluation process, many of Forrester’s sourcing clients explain that their involvement is not always clearly defined, resulting in a more reactive and makeshift role than they would like.

Why? In part, it’s due to the historical nature of the challenges SVM professionals face. For example, emerging technologies are not traditionally considered the responsibility of sourcing professionals, making them a less likely player for key insight. Additionally, the high standards sourcing applies to larger contracts often raises red flags, which does not translate very easily to new technologies. The unintended consequence? SVM professionals often slow the adoption process and are viewed as barriers to innovation, rather than supporters and enablers.

Cloud Turning Outsourcing ‘Upside Down’

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Cloud computing is set for a bright future and will turn traditional outsourcing “upside down”, but the latter is not likely to disappear for “many years yet”, according to an industry analyst.

Rolf Jester, Gartner’s Distinguished Analyst and Asia-Pacific vice president for IT services, pointed out that cloud is not yet a major threat to outsourcing because deals that have been struck or are being negotiated, will remain valid for five to 10 years and are delivering value to businesses.

“People aren’t going to change just because something new comes along,” Jester said in a phone interview, noting that from a buyer’s point of view, there are still concerns over security and privacy of data in cloud computing.

The Global SaaS Market

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

SaaS is one of the most talked-about topics since the early 2000s. The demand for SaaS applications has risen in all business categories, from large enterprises to SMBs. The key drivers for adopting SaaS are its low-cost and ease of deployment and use. There are various applications such as Service Oriented Architecture SOA and other web services which curtail the cost of enterprises because the usage of the software is metered and the enterprises pay accordingly.

The acceptance and uptake of SaaS applications have increased in almost all geographical regions. Currently, the US is the largest SaaS market in the world, followed by Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Apart from the regular SaaS applications such as CRM, HR, and web conferencing, there are certain other newer segments where the SaaS model is gradually gaining acceptance. For example, analysts opine that in Europe, the uptake of SaaS in the insurance market will increase in the coming years. The early adopters will obviously be the small rather than large insurers; however, banks are also likely to adopt SaaS. The European insurance market as a whole will adopt SaaS as a trusted model in coming years. Another segment that is also at a nascent stage is security technologies delivered via SaaS. However, the adopters of this segment are being given several offerings in order to make use of this upcoming technology for their IT systems defense infrastructure.
