Apple released iOS 5 beta to developers

Last Saturday Apple pushed iOS 5 beta 5 out to developers. That’s what Apple reviewers say about features and functionality in the fifth beta version of iOS 5.

MacRumors says the latest update includes fixes but no major new features. But CNET’s Edward Moyer reports that the release includes a Hearing Aid Mode, designed to improve compatibility between iOS devices and hearing aids.

9to5Mac reports that the new iOS includes the speech recognition feature believed to be called Apple “Assistant,” which will combine on-device and cloud processing to recognize natural speech instructions and be able to use various data sources to present the best set of results. (more…)

Mobile apps are more popular than web?

Surveys show that customers tend to spend more time using mobile apps that accessing Internet via traditional PCs and laptops.

According to Mary Meeker, KPCB, in 2011 smartphone and tablet shipments exceed those of desktop and notebook shipments. An interesting report by Flurry shows that for the time ever, daily time spent in mobile apps is 9% and currently makes 81 minutes versus the average of 74 minutes of using Internet on desktops and laptops. What’s even more interesting that it took only three years to achieve such great level of usage. The main drivers of the process were iOS and Android-based devices. That’s what we have:

Apple Announces iCloud

Last week at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference there were all the expected announcements of upgrades and new releases for iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs, etc. But the freshest news was the planned release of iCloud - the new way to store content and wirelessly share it within all Apple’s devices.

Unlike Google, Microsoft or Salesforce, Apple is not using web browser to access the cloud. Instead they enable applications to connect to the cloud automatically. All data (such as music, text documents, video etc.) is pushed to the cloud and can easily be accessed by any device with the same Apple ID. This eliminates the problem of browser campatibility, giving users opportunity to enjoy all the benefits cloud computing can provide. The new developer API makes transparent cloud based data access available to all apps. (more…)

According to a report by Chomp, 148apps.com и Chillingo, the leading mobile app trader has got more that 500 thousand apps for iOS (iPad, iPhone and iPod). 4 month ago the figure was just 350 thousand. As you can guess, such quantities allow App Store to remain the leader of mobile apps market.

The average price of an app equals $3,64 (in 2008 it was about $4-6). Free apps make 36% ot the total amount. If you decuded to purchase all the apps from App Store, that would cost you $891,982.24 + expenses for 7 terabytes of memory.

According to the report, App Store has sold apps for total of $2 billion. 30% of them went to Apple, and the rest was shared by 85 569 developers. (more…)
